Bay Leaf

Bay leaf is an herb that is commonly used in cooking. It comes from the bay tree (Laurus nobilis), which is commonly found in the Mediterranean region. Bay leaf is also used in folk medicine. Chemicals in bay leaf might affect blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

A popular spice used in pickling and marinating and to flavour stews, stuffings, and fish, bay leaves are delicately fragrant but have a bitter taste. They contain approximately 2 percent essential oil, the principal component of which is cineole.

Bay leaves contain antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic properties that can help to treat digestive disorders (like ulcers) and relieve gas. Bay leaves also contain tanins, which have a powerful astringent action that is beneficial for treating diarrhea.
